To say that the 79th edition of The Golden Globes has been shrouded with controversy is probably the biggest understatement since they said we would only have to go into quarantine for a couple of weeks. The mere fact that they’re happening at all seems surprising as not only have they been boycotted by pretty much every celebrity in Hollywood, but we’re also starting a new wave of massive event cancelations due to the increase of covid-19 related cases with the new Omicron variant.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HPFA) is still set for The Golden Globes to happen this Sunday, January 9, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel at 6:00 pm. There will be no red carpet, no musical guests, no guests at all really, and… no live transmission? At least not on television, as NBC, who year after year pays millions of dollars for the rights to broadcast the event, have made it clear that there’s no interest from them to do so this 2022. This makes us wonder if we will be able to watch the awards ceremony at all.
This decision was made not only do to the pandemic or the record declining ratings the show has consistently shown in later years, but for the aforementioned boycott about the lack of diversity and corruption allegations between the organization itself.
Last year’s Golden Globes (yes, there was an actual gala in 2021) was proof not only that the “preview of the Oscars” is struggling, but that there may be no need to continue with them at all. A very poor show was on display, even though regular hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler gave it their all, it was just not working at all. Again, poor ratings and what was clearly a show filled with technical difficulties in the middle of the pandemic indicate that maybe the Globes could retire once and for all.
Also last year, films and series such as Nomadland, Queen’s Gambit, The Crown and Minari, managed win awards and left us very high expectations for what could happen in 2022. However, if there’s something we can be sure of, it is that this year the HFPA, will not be able to ignore movies like The Power of the Dog, Dune or Belfast, or series like Succession, Mare of Easttown or the most watched in Netflix history, The Squid Game.
Where to watch
We know that, NBC will no longer be the host channel for the ceremony. But as they say, the show must go on, so you can catch all the nominees and winners will be live-streamed at goldenglobes.com and on the Golden Globes YouTube and Facebook channels. The 79th Golden Globe Awards is on Sunday, January 9, 2022 starting at 6:00 pm PST.
Due to the spread of the Omicron variant, there will be no presenters, audience, or media outlets permitted at the awards show. So as to what we will actually be able to see or what kind of transmission we will get is still a mystery.
There’s also no red carpet, but we know that only a few members of the HFPA and their associated philanthropists will be present. All guests attending will be required to show proof of vaccination, which includes the booster, as well as a negative PCR test within 48 hours of the event.
