Every year has its share of deaths of notable people. Perhaps it’s just the tenor of the times, but 2021 seemed like a particularly bad year in that regard, among many others.

We lost leaders in national and world affairs, such as Sen. Bob Dole, Gen. Colin Powell, Vice President Walter Mondale and South African activist Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

There were arts and culture legends Stephen Sondheim, Joan Didion, Charlie Watts and Cicely Tyson. We lost one of the great sports figures of all time in the great baseball slugger Henry Aaron.

Some of those lost were tied closely to our region, including Reading-based actor Michael Constantine, Norristown native and longtime Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tom Lasorda and Temple University basketball coach John Chaney.

We could fill this entire column with additional noteworthy names. Suffice it to say, it was a tough year.
That made it even more difficult to swallow when the waning days of 2021 gave us two more deaths of beloved pop culture figures: football coach and broadcaster John Madden and actress Betty White.

White’s death was particularly hard to take. The actress, 99, was just weeks away from her 100th birthday, and the celebration of that milestone had already begun.

Typically the death of someone who has reached such an advanced age is greeted with sorrow along with a certain amount of resignation. No one lives forever, after all, and few of us make it past our 90s.
But the report of White’s death on the last day of the year triggered an outpouring of shock and sorrow from people of all generations.

There are a few reasons for this. Most notably, it seemed as if White was always around. Her career began in the late 1940s at the dawn of television, and she remained in the public eye consistently right up until her death.

She accomplished the unusual feat of achieving her greatest fame in her 80s and 90s. This included continued work as a TV series regular, film roles and a most memorable appearance hosting “Saturday Night Live.” It seemed to many that she would stay alive, and active, forever.

White was never an above-the-title star. She gained much of her fame through longevity and association with two beloved television comedies, “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and “The Golden Girls.” She was the last surviving member of both casts (her colleagues Cloris Leachman, Ed Asner and Gavin MacLeod also died in 2021).

Beyond that, she came across as funny, humble and approachable throughout her career. People could relate to her. According to accounts from the time, that was true even back in the late 1950s when White, already a television veteran, appeared in Ephrata, Lancaster County, for her first live stage performances.

She leaves a great legacy and teaches us what’s possible to accomplish in one’s twilight years.

Madden, who died last week at 85, also has some ties to our area. He was a draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles, though his playing career was derailed by injury. Years later he would be behind the microphone for many of the team’s biggest games.

He had a remarkable career, first as a Super Bowl-winning coach, then as a broadcaster who revolutionized the profession with his informative but unorthodox approach and great sense of humor. And for many younger people he’s best known for lending his name to an enormously popular football video game.

Like White, Madden derived much of his appeal from his ability to come across as a regular person. Fans who never met him felt as if they knew him. And so many of those who did come across him in public reported that he was exactly as advertised — an unpretentious, gracious and fun individual.

And people from throughout the football world and beyond reacted to his death by describing not just his great accomplishments in multiple fields but how he went out of his way to share advice and support with others.

We mourn him, White and the rest of the people we lost in 2021. Here’s hoping for a brighter 2022.
