While David Nicholls’ novel One Day has already had a feature film adaptation, Netflix is now adapting the story for an Original drama series. The film famously starred Anne Hathaway, but so far, no news is out about the cast of the upcoming TV adaptation of One Day. Read on to find out what we do know so far.

Netflix to adapt David Nicholls’ novel One Day

The upcoming Netflix Original series One Day is based on David Nicholls’ 2009 novel of the same name. The series will follow Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew as they first meet up at university in 1988. However, having only just met, they both realize that the next day, following graduation, they will go their separate ways.

Despite this, Dex and Em cannot stop thinking about each other. As the years pass by, they both start leading separate lives – very different from the people they imagined they would be. Meanwhile, they are still unable to let go of that special something that happened between them that first night.

Due to this, an extraordinary relationship develops between them. Over 20 years, snapshots of that relationship are revealed on the exact same day – July 15 – of every year. Dex and Em face fights and squabbles, missed opportunities and hopes, laughter and tears.

When the true meaning of their one crucial day is revealed, they have to come to grips with the nature of love and life itself.

Previous adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel

David Nicholls’ novel, One Day, was previously adapted as a feature film in 2011, starring Anne Hathaway. The movie was released by Universal Pictures and bought in $59 million at the box office, on a budget of only $15 million.

Anyone keen on watching the movie first can enjoy a trailer below and stream it on Netflix:

Meanwhile, Netflix has yet to announce any of the upcoming cast for the TV adaptation of One Day.

Production status of Netflix series One Day

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the TV adaptation of One Day is currently in active development with scripts being written. Production is set to start at some time in 2022 in the UK, so the series is unlikely to air before around July 15, 2023. Obviously, the date is a guess, but it does match with the day the protagonists of the story meet each year. That would be a lot of fun!

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, the writing team is led by BAFTA-award winner Nicole Taylor (Wild Rose, Three Girls). She will be working alongside Anna Jordan (Killing Eve, Succession), Bijan Sheibani (Morning Song) and Vinay Patel (Doctor Who). On top of this, One Day is a Drama Republic production, with Universal International Studios and Focus Features.
