The next few weeks bring new series starring John Cena, Hilary Duff, Stanley Tucci, Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, Tiffany Haddish, and The Fraggles.

Usually, when you look at a whole month’s worth of new shows on the horizon, it’s hard to put together any kind of thematic throughline. These series come from a ton of different locations, perspectives, genres, and some from an entirely different medium.

But there are more than a few upcoming this January that revolve around a person or a group of people making their way back. Some are grieving, some are trying to regain some past sense of stability, some are atoning for mistakes, and some are just making a return trip to screens after decades away. Without too much armchair psychologizing, that seems fitting as we collectively embark on a brand new calendar year.

As usual, this monthly collection is made up of series from across broadcast, cable, and streaming. (Also, as tends to happen with midseason premieres on network TV, a few of these shows will shift their regular weekly timeslot once we’re free of the havoc that NFL playoffs wreak on the usual schedule.) There are also a few shows settling into their full first seasons after a December sneak peek. (We highlighted a few of those last month and, wouldn’t you know it, at least one of them is pretty good!)

If this collection is somehow not enough to fill your viewing calendar and you’re not quite ready to let go of 2021, check out all our past roundups from February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, and November.
