The Scream cast have shared their picks with Digital Spy on which previous movie in the franchise deserves a rewatch.
The fifth instalment in the Scream series doesn’t number itself as a sequel to the previous movies, but it is a continuation of the prior saga and brings back OG cast Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell.
A whole group of younger characters also enter the Woodsboro mythology for the new Scream, some of whom have direct ties to characters from the past. So, with all that said, which of the past movies do you need to rewatch the new Scream?
Digital Spy put that question to the OG and new cast of Scream – with the classic cast recommending fans at least rewatch the original 1996 Scream before heading to cinemas this time.
“I would always say the first, I think, just to get you hyped and excited,” Neve Campbell told us, with David Arquette suggesting a broader selection: “You have to watch them all, really. You definitely have to watch 1 and 4.”
Among the new Scream cast, Dylan Minnette, Marley Shelton and Jenny Ortega all agreed with Neve that the 1996 original is must-watch before approaching the 2022 version.
“You can’t beat the original. It always goes back to the original,” Jasmin Savoy Brown agreed.
Jenny Ortega said: “The original is a perfect, perfect movie. But if I had to suggest another one, I would say that the second film is also great.
“I think it’s my second-favourite, after the first. There’s really incredible sequences in there. Yeah, it’s great.”
A few of the other newbies feel it would be worthwhile if you went through more of the classic Screams – and they make a pretty convincing argument.
“If you could choose two, it’d be 1 and 4,” Minnette argued. “I think those are the two, if you could choose. They’re the only three that are set in Woodsboro, so those three together are a little trilogy of movies you could watch, I’d say.”
Sonia Ammar had a pretty decent strategy to approaching the franchise: “Maybe you should start in order? I think you, for sure, need to watch the original, the OG one.
“But all of them, in a sense, because they all have such cool kills and interesting scenes. The characters overlap. Yeah, all of them.”
There you have it! According to the cast of Scream, you should definitely watch the 1996 original, and probably the rest of the films too. But definitely Scream 4, and probably Scream 2 too.
We’re getting dizzy…
Scream will be released in cinemas on January 14.
