Spider-Man star Tom Holland has confirmed that suiting up as a superhero isn’t always as glamorous as it might look, revealing that he was left feeling “mortified” by a costume-related issue during filming of his first Marvel Spider-Man movie.
When he filmed 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the actor was new to the Marvel universe and consequently felt a little nervous about making his feelings clear at times while on set. But it turns out that his mum had no such fear.
Speaking to Jeremy Lynch alongside his co-star and real-life girlfriend Zendaya, Holland revealed that he accidentally got the Homecoming producers in trouble with his mum after he struggled to take toilet breaks in his tight Spidey costume.
“It happens all the time,” he said when asked whether he ever gets the urge to use the bathroom while in his superhero suit. “On the first film, I remember we did a sequence on the Washington Monument and I had to climb up and down it for, like, weeks on end.
“And basically, I didn’t go to the toilet for like 11 hours or something, and I was desperate. When you wear the harness under the suit – obviously you can’t put it over the top because you’ll see it, and because the suit is so tight you have to cinch the harness up from the get-go – it means going to the bathroom is a mission.
“I remember, I called my mum up, and I was like, ‘I’ve had a really hard day, I need to go to the toilet. I haven’t been to the toilet for 11 hours,'” he continued,
“Two or three days later, the producers took me aside, and they were like, ‘How are your kidneys?'”
He then added that the producers went on to explain: “Your mum’s called us and told us to give you adequate toilet breaks.”

The Uncharted and Cherry actor joked that although he was “mortified” by his mum’s intervention, he also felt “so grateful because I really needed to go to the bathroom and I was too scared to disrupt filming”.
However, after five years playing Peter Parker, Holland has no such fears anymore, as he joked that he’s now more likely to say, “‘I’m doing a shit! Leave me alone!'”
He is currently starring in his third Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, which has already broken a major box office record.
